Check out more about Bret and his collection below!
DCCollectors: How did you get into collecting DC toys and what was your first DC toy/collectible?
Bret Toomey: I’ve always been a massive Batman fan, but my first DC toy/statue was Starfire (DC Cover Girls from DC Collectibles). Later I discovered Sideshow Collectibles and it was all downhill from that point. I literally had to have a new piece every month.
DCCollectors: How many pieces are in your collection?
Bret Toomey: I currently have 12 pieces in my collection, 9 of which are DC/Batman Related. I have 5 more DC statues on pre-order, which include: Prime 1 Studio Arkham Joker, Prime 1 Studio Hush Poison Ivy, XM Studios Catwoman, XM Studios Batgirl, and the Sideshow Collectibles Joker Premium Format Figure.
DCCollectors: If you could only choose one item to keep, which one would it be?
Bret Toomey: If I could only keep one item, it would have to be my XM Studios Samurai Batman. This piece is the grail of my collection. So much versatility with multiple portraits and weapon switch-outs. He’s the first thing people notice when they come in. When I purchased Batman, I was so scared of having it shipped to me, that I drove 5 hours to pick him up, and 5 hours back.
DCCollectors: What is the one item that you really want to add to your collection?
Bret Toomey: It’s actually not a statue or toy that I would add, but an art print by Alex Ross called “Joker’s Reckoning”. It features all of the rogue’s gallery in this print. It’s an amazing piece that would make any collection complete.
DCCollectors: What piece of advice do you have for those just starting their collections?
Bret Toomey: When I first started this hobby, I wanted everything. So I made the mistake and bought everything (toys, pops, small statues, and big statues). Down the road, I found myself selling everything to start all over. If you want something wait for it. I wanted the EX Prime 1 Studio Deathstroke for as long as I could remember, but I couldn’t afford it. A year later, I scored one at retail plus free shipping! Patience is key. Eventually that statue, art print, or toy will come up at the price you are looking for.
DCCollectors: Do you have an interesting story regarding the collection, such as meeting someone famous while shopping for your toys, or a super deal you got on something? Something along those lines.
Bret Toomey: It’s not DC related, but I got to meet Stan Lee at the Silicon Valley Comic-Con. A friend and I literally stood in line for 6 hours to have him sign my Captain America shield. Nicest guy you’ll ever meet.
